Cos’è?

Lo Y2K bug, noto anche come Millennium bug, è il termine che si riferisce a un difetto informatico manifestatosi durante il passaggio di millennio a fine anni ‘90 – inizio anni 2000. Si era già previsto che i computer non avrebbero riconosciuto l’anno nuovo, interpretandolo erroneamente come il 1900. Può sembrare una fake news ma non lo è: già prima del 1999, i computer che elaboravano date del 2000 le interpretavano come 1900.

Perché è successo? 

Per risparmiare memoria, in molti software si usavano solo le ultime due cifre dell’anno, trasformando il 2000 in “00” inteso dai computer come le ultime due cifre del 1900. Questa situazione creò preoccupazione in imprese ed enti pubblici, che temevano che alla mezzanotte del 1 gennaio 2000 i computer, contenenti dati molto importanti, non riconoscessero la nuova data.

Le conseguenze:

Fortunatamente, le conseguenze del Y2K bug non furono catastrofiche. Anche se ci furono alcuni problemi, furono risolti e dopo pochi giorni tutto tornò alla normalità. La storia si ripete… Un aneddoto interessante è che anche al passaggio dal 999 al 1000 d.C. la popolazione europea era in preda a timori di un’imminente apocalisse, influenzata dalle scritture di San Giovanni. Questa paura ricorrente nei passaggi da un millennio all’altro è quasi una costante, che sia dovuto da libri cartacei o da schermi.

E per il futuro?

Nel 2038 si prevede un altro bug, soprannominato “epochalypse”. Il 19 gennaio 2038, alle ore 03:14:07, tutti i dispositivi non aggiornati a 64 bit smetteranno di funzionare. Questo perché possono gestire solo un numero limitato di secondi calcolati a partire dal 1 gennaio 1970. Per evitare problemi, sarà fondamentale aggiornare i sistemi informatici da 32bit a 64 bit.
